Nothing too serious - the meniscus in my right knee is torn and needs repair. I will be out for August but hopefully back to it in September.

Friends,

I hope you are all enjoying the summer days. Please find below the plan and background information for the ascent of Missouri Mountain, 14,067ft on Sunday 13 July. None of the day is mandatory – you can do as much or as little as you want. If you would rather not camp but drive down on Sunday morning then feel free – you will have to leave Denver early. Another alternative you might want to consider is sleeping at the trailhead in your car. You could zoom up the trail and catch us. I intend to hike in a ways and camp.

Missouri Mountain is ranked 37 on the 14er list. It is in the Sawatch Range and is accessible from the Missouri Gulch trailhead. If you have Roach’s 14er book the description of how to get to the trail head is on page 109. The route we will be taking is the Northwest Ridge, class 2 and the description is on page 113. Let me know if you don’t have this book and I will send you the description.

The trailhead is at 9,640ft so we have about 4,500ft of ascent to the summit in 5 miles. Unless the weather is really bad we will hike in an hour or so to about tree line where we should be able to find campsites and water. (bring purifying tablets). A bivi bag will be ideal too. I have a couple of spares if you need one.

If you are carrying a tent you can probably get away with just the inner and leave the fly behind. Unless you want to carry a stove bring cold food for the trip. I will take a Jet Boil stove to boil water for morning coffee.

We’ll make an ‘alpine’ start (which means very early!). We can pick up tents on the way back down.

Please let me know if you intend to join me and if you need any more information.

Thanks!

Gavin
